As well as providing traffic and travel information to radio stations, ROMANSE operators themselves 'stay tuned' to ensure they receive information relayed to the Radio Stations by members of the public and organisations such as TrafficLink (who in turn provide information to The AA).
AA RoadWatch can be found here. TrafficLink can be found here.
The radio is an ideal transmission medium for traffic and travel information given it's ability to be received directly by anyone, most notably the car-travelling general public.
So important is the radio as a means of transmitting information, BBC Radio Solent have a booth in our Southampton Control Room dedicated to broadcasting the "traffic report" segment over the air waves until 11:00am.
The Future
The humble Radio has always been a popular means of relaying traffic information. New Digital Radio (DAB) breathes new life into the technology and provides many opportunities for organisations (like us) wishing to provide information to the roaming public.
Developments like Tpeg will ensure the continued exploitation of Radio as an information transmission medium.
