Variable Message Signs
These signs can be found in key locations on major urban and inter-urban routes. The purpose of the VMS (and EMS) is to provide live information to drivers mid-journey.
EMS and VMS in the Hampshire area can be set by Hampshire, Southampton and Portsmouth authorities, except where the falls into the Highways Agency's domain. In this instance:
"The National Traffic Control Centre is responsible for the strategic diversion signing which gives specific information to motorists about alternative routes."
